Great black and white photographers
Yousuf Karsh
Yousuf was born on
December 23, 1908 and lived all the way through July 13, 2002.
He was known for his great portrait work. Only when he was
in his 60th career he started a breakthrough by taking photos of
political leaders, artist and etc. After that he started getting fame from a
magazine called Time, unfortunately he later retired in 1992. Karsh didn’t
start till 1932 when he got his first studio in Ottawa, which he stayed there
until 1972. From staying in Ottawa all that time he earned the title/ nickname
“Karsh of Ottawa”. Karsh was known as one of the portrait photographer’s of the
20th century, and Canada’s portrait leaders. Karsh first marriage
was with a women named Solange Gathier, unfortunately she died in 1969 from
cancer. His second marriage was with another lady named Esterilla Maria Nachbar
(whom they never had children.) Karsh retired in 1992 (by closing down the
studio) and moved to Boston in 1997. In dedication for Karsh they had a private
funeral in his honor, in Ottawa. After he died his work was placed in a museum
called the Metropolitan Museum of Art. That is including all of his work for
example, his mess ups his misprints his good ones and his ok ones. To this day
Karsh’s work is admired towards many people to inspire them, which brings me to
my point to as why I picked him for my biography. I picked Yousuf Karsh for my
biography essay because; his artwork impressed me with his variety of people.
Like he used some of the famous people we didn’t know because we were to young
to see or understand them. But with Karsh work he has opened a window to the
past that we can jump through and view the world around him. As you can see
from the bottom two pictures that I have chosen you can see that these two
people are much older than you and me. These pictures were taken in the 1960’s,
probably nowhere near your time of era. That is exactly what I’m trying to
emphasize that he can capture things that we couldn’t. I also admire that he
doesn’t let the rules of photography distract or off set his picture from the
main objective of his picture. In conclusion I admire his work of photography
because he take the past and makes it the present; and also That he doesn’t let
the rule of photography distract him from his purpose of shooting.
